Takeshi was once the gym leader of the Pewter City Gym, but now he is paired up with Satoshi and Kasumi on a strange journey that leads him far away from his home.

Takeshi's goal is to be the greatest Pokémon breeder ever. He creates his own recipes for his Pokémon food and knows what a Pokémon likes and doesn't like. He cares for all of his Pokémon; sometimes you might even see him grooming his Vulpix! Takeshi is a very mature-acting teenager. He knows how to cook and clean, since he has had to personally raise all ten of his brothers and sisters while his father was off trying to become a great Pokémon trainer. Because of his matureness, Takeshi is like a mother to Satoshi and Kasumi. If it wasn't for him, who would stop Satoshi and Kasumi from quarreling?

At one time, Takeshi thought he saw a life of helping Professor Ivy in her lab and with her studies; now he becomes depressed whenever her name is mentioned. Although we will never know what happened to Takeshi while he was staying with Professor Ivy, he's back on the television show, and that's all that matters. Switching roles with Kenji, Takeshi assists Satoshi and Kasumi on their journey through the Johto League. During this time, Takeshi learns even more about breeding and even meets some new Pokémon friends! After Satoshi finally completes the Johto League, the three friends part ways; Takeshi and Kasumi heading back to Kanto.

Later on, Takeshi returns again to team up with Satoshi and Haruka on their adventure in the lands of Houen.
